AI answer engine

An AI answer engine is a tool that responds to queries with a generated, direct answer rather than a list of links, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

What it is

An AI answer engine is a search or query tool that generates a direct, synthesised answer to a user's question rather than returning a list of links to follow. Examples include ChatGPT (with Browse), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude.

These tools read content from across the web, assess what is most relevant and trustworthy, and construct a response that cites or summarises the source material.

Why it matters for your site

When a user asks an AI answer engine a question, the engine decides which sites to draw from. If your content is not readable to the engine's crawler, or if your pages lack the structure signals the engine relies on, your site is excluded from the answer entirely.

This is sometimes called the "zero-click" problem: the user gets the answer without visiting any page. Being cited in the answer is the new version of appearing on page one.

What makes content readable to these engines

The same fundamentals that help classic search also help AI answer engines: real crawlable text, clear heading structure, fast load times, and valid HTML. The additional layer is AI-specific signals: schema markup, parseable data, and conventions like llms.txt.
