AI Mode

Google's conversational AI search experience. Like AI Overviews, it grounds answers in indexed content, so staying indexable and helpful is the way in.

What it is

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience: a chat-style surface where you can ask a question, get an AI-generated answer, and follow up in plain language without starting a new search.

Under the hood it works like AI Overviews. It uses retrieval-augmented generation over Google's regular search index, plus a query fan-out technique that fires off several related searches at once and pulls the answer together from what it finds. Google is explicit that there is no separate optimisation track here: its AI features optimization guidance says the work is simply good SEO. If your pages are not in the index, they cannot appear in AI Mode.

Why it matters

AI Mode answers more questions on the results page itself, so the visibility battle shifts from "did I rank?" to "was I one of the sources Google chose?" The answer comes down to the same fundamentals: a crawlable site, helpful content written for people, and clear structure Google can parse.

Because AI Mode draws from the core index, you do not need llms.txt or custom AI markup to be eligible for it. You need to be indexed and worth citing. Our breakdown of how AI Overviews pick their sources applies directly here, since the two surfaces share the same retrieval machinery.
